Defiance

The Old man and the Sea said:

‘it’s a big storm so we may as well enjoy it’

Driving empty roads in red warning hours,

To pass a jackknifed HGV perched helpless upon her side,

Tyre tracks cut deep into the embankment,

And so with driver long gone I pass by unaffected:

Calm, sharp and feeling alive.

For fear is a funny thing

And it could take hold at the most innocuous of moments:

Upon waking on a Monday morning,

Or pinned to the wall in some conversation

But not now,

Not today,

Or on some crisis like this.
